Return to Africa

In early September 387, along with his mother, his son and friends, Augustine sets off for Africa. While stopping over in Ostia Tiberina, waiting for the ship to sail, Monica falls ill and, after nine days of fever, dies at the age of 56.

For Augustine, the pain is indescribable, but he soon regains his serenity because "my mother, procuring with her faith and customs praises to Your name, had no concern other than being mentioned before Your altar".

From Ostia, Augustine returns to Rome, where he remains for about ten months, visiting in admiration the Roman monasteries of men and women who live in brotherly love, in holiness and in Christian freedom.
