APURIMAC AREA AND THE AUGUSTINIAN MISSION
These three provinces are extended over 8,000 Km2 with 81,000 inhabitants. According to the development scale of values, these 3 “ high Provinces” are at the last position. 99% of inhabitants are native and speak quechua language. During the last centuries, people have chosen to take refuge in these inhospitable and wild places to escape from pre-Inca Inca and colonial invasions and harassments. This explains the natural mistrust towards each person who is not part of their clan and their devotion to old traditions that helped their survival.
The Italian Augustinian Mission in the 3 "High Provinces"
In 1968 Pope Paulus VI instituted The Prelatura of Chuquibambilla, which gathers the territory of 3 High Provinces of Grau, Antabamba and Cotabambas, detached it from Abancav Diocese, chief town of the region, that remained with other 4 Provinces of the district. The Prelatura of Chuquibambilla is the smallest ecclesiastical Peru’s jurisdiction concerning both territory extension and numbers of inhabitants, but it is extremely uneven and with many difficulties in communications.
